What is Pilates and How Can It Benefit me?
Exercises are tailored to find the balance in an individual’s body, lengthen all muscles and align the body to improve posture. Under the supervision of a trained instructor, Pilates can be practiced by the elderly, pregnant women, or by those recovering from injury or health problems. For the Non-Athlete: Non-athletes benefit through an extremely strong core (abs, obliques, and back muscles) resulting in improved posture, increased balance and strengthening of muscles that are used in daily life activities. Flexibility and injury prevention are also greatly improved. For the Athlete: Pilates is popular with athletes due to improved injury prevention and stamina through core strengthening and flexibility exercises, as well as visualization methods. Higher performance is achieved without adding unwanted bulk, a particular benefit for those such as dancers and tri-athletes. For those with injuries: Back pain is commonly reduced or eliminated. Pilates has been shown to speed recovery of most muscle and joint injuries. In fact, Pilates was originally designed to assist injured patients. For the elderly and pregnant: The elderly benefit by gaining increased strength and flexibility through exercises with less repetitions. They also develop improved posture and better balance, thus reducing the likelihood of injuries. Pregnant women benefit by gaining strength in their back and other core muscles. This can help ease the backaches in the later months, which are caused by the imbalance in their bodies.
